Description

An ivory netsuke representing an arm wrestling between two Nios. The Nios are two gods, temple gards, of Hindu inspiration, those two figures are known to be very strong. That’s why we often see them in japanese art in grotesque postures (mending a sandal) with a grimacing face, or here as competitors to find out who is the strongest. Japanese do not show them much deference.

Period : XVIIIe or Middle Edo
